Former public defender pleads guilty to theft

A former public defender and solicitor for Northampton County has struck a plea deal over theft charges.

Anthony Martino has pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.

In exchange prosecutors dropped 14 other theft charges.

Prosecutors say the lawyer stole money from clients after writing checks to himself from a man's estate.

Martino's attorney says his client had problems with the IRS and that led to the thefts.

Martino also faces a lawsuit.

He'll be sentenced in July.

Martino also owes $212,000 in restitution $100,000 of which he paid Friday.
