Future of Tatamy post office uncertain

Closing or reduced hours will be discussed Wednesday evening

TATAMY, Pa. - The U.S. post office in Tatamy may be closed or at least have its hours of operation cut back.

A meeting about possible changes will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Hope Lutheran Church, 240 S. Eighth St. in Tatamy, said borough secretary Deanne Werkheiser.

The meeting has been called by the U.S. Postal Service, which has been soliciting community opinions about the future of the post office.

Results of a survey it has done will be discussed, but no decision will be made at the meeting.

A post office has been in the Northampton County borough for 121 years.

Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and voice their concerns.

Some say the post office, which is next to the police station and borough office, is a center of town activity.

One of several options being considered would keep the post office open, but reduce window service hours from seven to six hours on weekdays. (Saturday hours would not change.)

Another would be to close the post office and provide roadside mailbox delivery. A postal official said that will be done only if a majority in the community shows a strong preference for a "discontinuance study."

A third option being considered would be to find a contractor, usually a local business, to replace the current post office with a "postal retail unit."

Or the Tatamy post office could be closed and post office box service would be provided borough residents in another nearby post office.
