Glam or Sham: In search of the perfect pout

Have you ever tried a beauty trend only to find it didn't work as promised or just wasn't right for you?

Have you held off on trying a trend because of the cost?

WFMZ's Jaccii Farris is checking out some of the hottest beauty trends in her series "Glam or Sham".

First up, products to enhance your lips.

Countless poems have been written about the power of the pucker. It's no wonder many ladies seek out the perfect product to give them lush lips.

69 News checked out three beauty trends that promise a plump pout.

WFMZ Content Manager Jamasyn Hyde was our tester for some of the products.

"I'm not overly crazy about my lips," said Hyde. "I just thought it might be interesting to see what it looks like. I don't want to do anything crazy but I think it would be nice to see if it helps fill them out a little bit."

First, we tried Juvalips.

The cost is $129 and it uses gentle suction to volumize lips and only takes a minute.

After one application, there was some plumping.

After three applications, it was more noticeable and lasted two hours.

Juvalips says some minor bruising may initially occur but after prolonged use, that goes away and results can last up to six hours.

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Samina Wahhab says she could see it used for special occasions but not on a daily basis because of the amount of time it takes.

"If you want your lips to look like this all day you would have to literally do this to yourself several times a day," said Wahhab. "The other thing is that it's only been around for about a year and we don't know what the long-term effects are going to be."

Another trend is one Wahhab administers regularly: Juvaderm.

The filler runs roughly $700 a syringe.

Our tester for this product is Melissa Bowman.

"I am here to get an upper lip," said Bowman.

Juvaderm is an FDA approved hyaluronic acid.

"Which is a natural lubricant in the body. We actually find it in our joint fluids and other places, and so it gradually just gets eaten away by the body over time," said Wahhab.

Bowman's procedure took five minutes and her results should last about a year.

Now for a lip injection of a different kind: Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Gloss

At $28 for a full sized tube, it promises to pump up the volume of your lips without needles.

Too Faced says the product is inspired by a medically-proven blood vessel dilating technology and was created to deliver a fuller, plumper lip immediately and over time.

"I'm feeling a little tingly around the edges," said Hyde after putting on the gloss.

The tingling lasted for just a few minutes and then, "They are bigger! And pinker!" said Hyde.

The plumping lip gloss lasted for about five hours.

In part two of our series "Glam or Sham" we will take a look at eyebrow beauty trends.
