Gov. Wolf, Congressman Dent welcome Assali family

VIDEO: Dent and Wolf greet Assalis

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - In the company of the Assali family area legislators are sounding off about the Trump administration’s travel ban and it's possible future.

Governor Tom Wolf was the first to greet the former Damascus-based Assalis as they in Allentown.

"It's really a wonderful welcome to the entire family. Think of what they've been through," Wolf said while standing in their Allentown driveway.

The six family members touched down at New York's JFK Airport Monday morning after being turned away a little more than a week ago in Philadelphia.

This after their already acquired visas and green cards were voided mid-air due to Donald Trump's immigration travel ban.

"9 days late but maybe an hour early today," Charlie Dent quipped from JFK.

The Lehigh Valley Republican congressman, who's nearly neighbors with part of the family that lives in Allentown, met the group at JFK.

"Here to celebrate the rule of law. These people came here the right way, we encourage people to come into this country legally," Dent said.

Dent added, "I hope the executive order is not enforced, I would prefer to back to the drawing board with a more thoughtful deliberate policy."

For the just-arrived family members their travel nightmare and 13-year visa struggle is over.

Wolf says he's ready to make sure others can wake up to a similar reality.

"This is a federal issue but I can stand on my bully pulpit to say to these folks they are welcomed in my state, these folks are welcome here in Pennsylvania," Wolf said.

A decision on the ban could come soon but the Supreme Court may ultimately have the final say.
