Greater Swiss Mountain Dog show coming to the Lehigh Valley

LOWER SAUCON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Lehigh Valley is going to the dogs! Well, kind of.

Saturday marks the beginning of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America National Specialty in Bethlehem.

It's being held at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Center.

Nicknamed "Swissies," the dogs will be competing in a variety of events including obedience, a 10-mile hike, and pulling.

The large-sized dogs are known not only for their strength, but also for their use.

The breed came known as the poor man's horse because it was cheaper than horses and could do much of the same work.

Janie and Wayne Hecker in Lower Saucon Township fell in love with the breed several years ago.

"Swissies you'll find are like potato chips, you can't have just one," Janie Hecker said.

Now, they have two.

While the dogs are perfectly content hanging out at home, Toby and Klara are also show dogs and have racked up quite a few wins over the years.

Klara was recently recognized as a Westminster Kennel Club merit winner.

"Once they win you want them to win again and again," Janie Hecker said.
