Grim's Orchard hosts giant pumpkin weigh-off

VIDEO Grim's Orchard hosts...

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - You know autumn is here when you start seeing pumpkins and gourds everywhere.

It's food and decoration to most of us, but for some growers it's much more than that.

The best of the best got together at Grim's Pumpkin Patch Saturday to show off the fruit of their labor at the Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off.

There were different varieties of pumpkins and there were even side competitions for the largest watermelons and tomatoes, but that's not what brought out the crowd.

"The main event is the pumpkins. We have about 12. Looking at the lineup here, I can say there will probably be three to four over 1300 pounds. I think our big guy here is going to check in somewhere around 1800 pounds," said Jim Gerhardt, president of the Giant Pumpkin Growers Association.

And he was absolutely right. The winning pumpkin checked in at 1,826 pounds. That's a new record for the organization.

It was grown by Tony Ciliberto, of Wilkes-Barre.
