Hellertown councilman accused of theft

HELLERTOWN, Pa. - A Hellertown councilman has resigned amid allegations he stole from the borough by improperly filing time cards.

John Bate was a Hellertown council member and the borough's emergency management coordinator.

He resigned from both positions effective Wednesday.

Bate was arraigned Thursday on theft charges.

According to court documents, he's accused of falsifying more than $38,000 worth of receipts with Dewey Fire Company Number One.

The Borough of Hellertown released the following statement concerning Bate’s resignation:

The Borough wishes to inform the public that Mr. Bate has submitted his voluntary resignation effective February 15th 2017 both as Councilmen and Hellertown's Emergency Management Coordinator.

Formal action on Mr. Bate's resignation will take place at the next regularly scheduled council meeting and a replacement will be appointed per the procedures in the Borough Code.

In regards to the now vacant Emergency Management Coordinator position, the Borough also would like to inform all residents that procedures are in place for temporary coverage of the Emergency Management Coordinator position until such a time an interim or replacement can be appointed by Borough Council and the County.

As this is an active investigation the Borough will corporate with all relevant authorities on this matter.
