Hero saves young girl from fire

Man rescues child from house fire

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - An Allentown man is being called a hero after rescuing an 8-year-old girl from a house fire on W. Liberty Street.

Michael Surrell said he and his wife had just arrived home on Thursday afternoon when they saw their neighbors house was on fire.

"I just ran into the house, ran into a wall of jet black, thick smoke," Surrell said.

He said he located his neighbor's daughter in a hallway on the second floor.

"I called out … where are you?" Surrell said.

He picked the girl up and ran out of the house where Surrell said he performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.

"She woke up and she looked at me in the eye…I just said it's ok, I got you."

Surrell and his young neighbor are both being treated for smoke inhalation but are expected to be ok. Surrell said he is still a bit shocked by what happened.

"I always feel responsible for all the kids [in the neighborhood.] I may not be their parent but I was raised in a time when the whole neighborhood raised the children," he said.
