I-78 crash leaves Hellertown exit sign smashed

HELLERTOWN, Pa. - State police say a 55-year-old man crashed his tractor-trailer Friday morning on I-78 near the Hellertown exit.

Police reported the crash shortly after 9 a.m. and I-78 East was closed for approximately 2 hours with traffic backed up for miles.

According to police, the driver was traveling westbound on I-78 in the right lane when he lost control and crossed over the left lane of travel.

He then traveled into the center median, struck the high tension cable barriers and continued into the eastbound lanes of travel, crossing over both the left and right lanes, striking a light pole and the Hellertown exit sign.

He came to a final rest down an embankment prior to Route 412. Officials say the driver was transported to St. Luke's Fountain Hill for his injuries.

The investigation remains open.
