Independence Day festivities canceled

NAZARETH, Pa. - While many folks are gearing up for Independence Day festivities, some area events have fizzled out.

Camel Beach Mountain Water Park said it isn't having fireworks because of construction, but some other local cancellations may get a reprieve next year.

"The kazoo parade has been an event that we, the chamber, have traditionally administered and coordinated for the past several years," said Cindy Fairbanks, the Nazareth Bath Area Chamber of Commerce. "We decided not to have it this year."

The chamber put the kibosh on the kazoo bash in Northampton County. The event received national attention when "Big Bang" actress and Nazareth native Kate Micucci bragged about it on Jimmy Kimmel.

But organizers said the grand marshal isn't available and there have been problems finding enough Kazoos to hand out to the folks along the parade route.

The cancellation is a sour note for some.

"I was looking forward to it. It's my first time around here," said Henry Lucas of Nazareth.

In Coplay, Lehigh County, Independence Day is also looking a little dark. The borough announced last year the 2014 fireworks were off, but officials said they're still getting dozens of complaints about it this year.

Their fireworks fundraisers fizzled out, they said, and no one has stepped in to take their place.

"Next year, I hope we have them. Everybody comes to see Coplay fireworks, you know," said Joann Zigler.

But there is a bright spot to this dark tale. Coplay said if someone starts a donation drive, fireworks may return.

And Nazareth officials said the kazoo parade will get a second wind.

"Next year is a very special year for Nazareth. It's our 275th anniversary as a borough, so yes, we do plan on reintroducing the kazoo parade," said Fairbanks.
