It's a Girl: Allentown family throws one-of-a-kind baby shower

One couple's journey to adult adoption

It's a Girl: Allentown family throws...

Mom and Dad are titles Anne and Sam Crothers of Allentown never expected to hold.

"We really thought that it wasn't going to happen, we tried to adopt out of Panama over a decade ago and that crashed and burned horribly," said Sam.

Devastated over the failed adoption and unable to have children of their own, Sam came to terms with life as a pair but Anne's fiery passion to become a mother continued burning.

"I was still looking, hoping, searching, wishing," said Anne.

Her wish was granted in March by way of a Facebook message from a woman named Christa.

"I had signed up on the site specifically for a daughter and she had signed up for a mother," said Anne.

Unbeknownst to Sam, Anne created a profile on the website creatingextendedfamilies.com, a network designed to connect people who have aged out of the foster care system with families looking to adopt and nine years later. She and Christa matched.

"At first I thought it may be a scam," said Sam.

Anne, a bit skeptical herself, decided to meet Christa for lunch, a meal that would change both of their lives.

"It was just really natural and we became like a family," said Christa Crothers.

Anne and Sam's duo quickly became a trio.

"The dynamic is absolutely beautiful," said Sam.

"I felt that love, just like genuine love, that they had toward me and I wanted it all the time," said Christa.

Christa is 30 years old and grew up in upstate New York.  She lost her biological father at a young age and says she was in and out of an abusive home throughout her childhood.

"I just figured that I'd be in therapy for the rest of my life," said Christa Crothers.

But now her wildest dream is becoming a reality. The Crothers met with a lawyer and learned adult adoption is legal in Pennsylvania.

"It certainly feels like fate," said Sam Crothers.

The adoption is expected to be official January, but in the meantime, this new family is celebrating with a baby shower.  They held the party Saturday at the Historic Benner Mansion.  The Crothers say the shower was a chance for Christa to meet her relatives and for Anne and Sam to mark a milestone.

"Today is a miracle," said Anne.

The Crothers say in January Christa will take their name and be given a new birth certificate.
