Jaindl Farms loses turkey barn to fire

NORTH WHITEHALL, Pa. - Jaindl Farms lost a 300-feet-long turkey barn in a fire Thursday but it could have been much worse.

According to North Whitehall Fire Marshal Don Jacobs, the barn in the Coffeetown Road complex is unusable after a 2-alarm fire that began around 2:30 p.m.

Jacobs says the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, however, the investigation is only in the preliminary stages.

Jacobs said he is focusing on a combination of factors, mainly the wind, hay being used to prep the barn, and heaters that were being used to heat the facility.

Workers, while getting the barn ready for the 10 thousand turkeys that were set to arrive next week, were opening the doors throughout the day and the wind may have blown some hay near one of the heaters and started the fire.

No humans or animals were injured.
