ALLENTOWN, Pa. - More than one thousand people attended a job fair Thursday for positions in Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone, or NIZ.
Hundreds of positions are open at the PPL Center and other employers including the Allentown Parking Authority and Sacred Heart Hospital.
"It's a very big turnout but I'd imagine it would be, a lot of people don't have jobs and it's close to home," said Dawn Smith, one of the people in line.
Hundreds lined up with resumes in hand outside the Lehigh County Government Center for the job fair that started at 1 p.m.
Nancy Dischinat, the executive director of the Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board, said they brought 100 people in at a time.
She said, "We're very interested in making sure downtown Allentown residents are first in line and so far 90 percent of everyone that has walked in is from Allentown."
Dischinat said there are more than 400 part time and full time positions to be filled.
Gunnar Fox, the PPL Center's general manager, said, "The response has been great. We're happy to see the community really rally around this arena."
People interested in a variety of jobs are hoping to land one and look forward to a new opportunity.
"I'm out here applying, see what I can get out here so I can reestablish myself, make some money, make my life better," said Jeffrey Ojeda, Jr.
Daniel Quinones said, "Just get something to make a new base for my family and me, something to earn more money, that's all I need, that's all it comes down to is money."
"It would mean a lot," said job seeker Henry Shearman. "Just be a little better, you can make ends meet a little better."
Smith added, "It would be wonderful. I would be set, I would be set."
There is another job fair for the PPL Center jobs Wednesday, July 23 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at PA CareerLink Lehigh Valley at 555 Union Boulevad in Allentown. That is open to all people seeking part time and full time positions at the arena.
