Judge rules Larry Holmes' nephew will stand trial

EASTON, Pa. - A Northampton County judge has ruled that Jacob Holmes Jr. will stand trial for the death of Miguel Aponte.

Aponte was shot and killed inside the Easton Café back in 2009.

During a preliminary hearing on Thursday, Holmes lawyers tried to get the charges dismissed but the judge said Holmes Jr. will stand trial for charges of Homicide and Conspiracy to Commit Homicide.

"I'm just praying for justice because we deserve it. If you want to go by his theory life for life, he deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail,” said Dana Slingland, a friend of Miguel Aponte.

Neither Holmes' family nor attorney wanted to discuss the case after Thursday morning’s preliminary hearing but in a previous interview with 69 News, Jacob Holmes Sr. insisted his son is innocent.

Holmes Sr. said family ties to legendary boxer Larry Holmes made Holmes Jr. a target.

Jacob Holmes Jr. is expected to be back in court in December.
