LCCC to offer STEM classes for youth this summer

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - Lehigh Carbon Community College will be offering summer classes in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at it's main campus in Schnecksville. 

According to a press release from the school, the classes are designed for students in grades 6-10. 

LCCC instructors will be be teaches the classes that are titled "Pump Up Your Brain."

According to the release, participants can choose from one-week sessions that teach Everyday Biotechnology and the applications of chemistry and biology. This is where students will explore scientific concepts that can be applied in the home and garden. The following classes will be held Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for students in grades 9-10 (rising). The fee is $200 per week; additional materials fee may apply, according to the release.

Computer Science Principles: Code! Play! Game! teaches gaming concepts through racing games, mazes and other activities, according to the release. Students will create their own video games using a free, easy drag-and- drop program designed by M.I.T. The following classes will be held Monday through Friday, June 26-30. The fee is $150 per week, the release stated. 

Grades 6-8 (rising)
8:30 to 11:30 a.m. (YOU 521-55)

Grades 9-10 (rising)
1:30 to 4:30 p.m. (YOU 521-55A)

The Women in Science: 19 th Century – Present class pays special attention to the work in microbiology of Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, who discovered the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing molecule, and a thorough investigation of the most famous Nobel Prize-winning “women in science”. The following class will be held Monday through Thursday, July 10-20, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., for a fee of $400, according to the release.
