Lehigh County Chief Public Defender warns of telephone scammers

Numerous individuals claim they've received telephone calls from a person saying they're an attorney with the Lehigh County Public Defender's Office.

Chief Public Defender Kimberly Makoul is advising the public not to send money to the caller, as the caller claims the victim's child or grandchild had been charged with a crime and bail money must be sent to the attorney immediately.

The caller then directs the victim to wire the money through Walmart to a third person.

Makoul reassures the public the caller is not from the public defender's office.

Anyone who receives a similar call should contact the Lehigh County Public Defender's Office at 610-782-3157.
