Lehigh Township supervisors cancel hearing on transfer of liquor license

LEHIGH TWP., Pa. - A public hearing concerning the transfer of a liquor license to Friendly Food Market in Lehigh Township, Northampton County was cancelled Tuesday evening by the township board of supervisors.

Solicitor David Backenstoe said the supervisors must have a public hearing on the matter within 45 days.

Backenstoe recommended the supervisors work with its zoning officer regarding the transfer.

"[The Easton business requesting the transfer] would have to undergo significant zoning change," he said. "I think they are intending to do that. They realized they have much zoning ordinance to be done."

One of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board requirements for the license is a 30-seat restaurant, which the applicant applied.

The applicant is requesting the transfer of the liquor license to the Friendly Food Market at 4619 West Mountain View Drive.

The board approved the 60-day extension request.

"The ball is in their court," Backenstoe added.

In other business, the board voted 4-1 to advertise the 2018 budget with changes. Supervisor Cynthia Miller voted in opposition.

Township Manager Alice Rehrig said the the capital improvement plan was updated.

The 2018 budget, estimated at $4.78 million, includes a no tax increase.

Also during the meeting, the status of township police Officer Peterson Myrthil was changed from probationary to full-time.

"He's been a great community officer," police Chief Scott Fogel said.

Recreation Director for Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority Michael Kukitz also gave a presentation during the board meeting.

Kukitz said the purpose of his job is offer the residents recreational options. The township has added options such as a summer playground program, movies and concerts in the park, yoga in the park and a seniors' program.

"We're here to give back to the residents a strong park and recreation department," he said. "It's about getting people out there talking to people."

The board is scheduled to hold its next meeting Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. in the township municipal building, at 1069 Municipal Drive, Walnutport.
