Lehigh University student competes on JEOPARDY!

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh University student Corey Schmalzle competed in the JEOPARDY! College Championship Thursday night.

“It's an honor to be the first person to represent Lehigh on College JEOPARDY!," said Corey.

“On the show, most of the contestants are Ivy Leaguers or from big state schools, so it's exciting to have the opportunity to put Lehigh in the same discussion as those schools," Corey added.

Corey says he and his friends are avid bar trivia fans and he originally took the test to be on the show last year but never heard anything.

Then, when an e-mail came reminding him to test again, he figured why not?

That led to a live audition and a few weeks later he got a phone call requesting him to fly out to Los Angeles in January and appear on the show.

"I was shocked when I got the call," he said.

On his trivia talent Corey said, "my memory just kind of works so I remember the dumb little things. I think I get it from my mom. She watches a lot of TV and movies and remembers all these random trivia tidbits. So, we would just have different conversations about trivia. But, I don't actively read Wikipedia or the encyclopedia for fun."

As for preparation, Corey said he watched last year's College Tournament but much of his practice came at trivia nights at Molly's Pub in Bethlehem.

The final results of the contest, unfortunately, did not go Corey’s way.

Corey finished in third with a score of 11,000 in the closely fought contest with the winner finishing with a score of 15,600.

Regardless of the outcome, it was a great achievement as Corey was only one of 15 students nationwide selected to attend this season's competition.
