Lehigh Valley Airport breaks ground on new hangar

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Lehigh Valley International Airport is taking off on a new 54,000 square foot commercial hangar project.

"So this was about two years in the making to get to a ground-breaking ceremony," said Executive Director of Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority Tom Stoudt.

The $16 million project can begin because of a $6 million grant from PennDOT's Bureau of Aviation.

"Looking at the criteria, this was the biggest bang for the buck. Looking at what is already established in the Lehigh Valley International Airport, things are going to continue to blossom in this region," said Director of PennDOT Bureau of Aviation Anthony McCloskey.

"So that's why the Lehigh valley is well positioned to get more state grant money because we're shovel ready, ready to go, and we deliver," said Pennsylvania Senator Lisa Boscola.

The hangar will allow the valley, which is the third largest Metropolitan area in Pennsylvania, to attract more business.

"This is really going to be designed for that next generation of corporate aircraft. These are the type of aircraft that wouldn't be able to be based here at ABE today," said Stoudt.

"We know that our airport is a component, a key component, to making sure we have the structures in place to support our business community," said Boscola.

"It really opens up the possibilities for companies to base here," said Stoudt.

The hanger will also create a trickle-down effect for jobs.

"You need to have staffing available, the pilots have to be ready and available within an hour. So they're going to be moving and locating here. And you also have the maintenance of these jets," said Boscola.

The project should be completed within a year.

"You can also get the passenger side expanding because then all the sudden you see the commercial airlines saying 'oh, what's going on out there in the Lehigh valley?'" said Boscola.
