Lehigh Valley job fairs present hope to unemployed

Seasonal work could turn into a full-time position

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - At 55, Gary Yurasits is at a spot he never thought he'd be: At a job fair.

He says it's been difficult to find a job over the past six months.

But Yurasits may be in luck.

Two job fairs, one at the Lehigh Valley Mall and the other inside the Airport Road Days Inn near LVIA, are offering hundreds of positions.

Melissa Werner of healthcare call center, Sykes, said she wants to connect with seasonal hires.

"Looking for people with a good, strong customer service background," she said.

"It's a great candidate market right now," added Gretchen Hardy of Kelly Services.

Hardy needs nearly 600 people for jobs that can extend well past the holidays.

"If you're a great worker and have a good work ethic and prove yourself, you'll get hired," she said.

Macy's, Target, JC Penny, Kohl's and Amazon are just a few of the national chains looking to ramp up seasonal hiring.

But if your goal is looking past the holidays and more long term, Erin Grube of the staffing agency, Allied, has some advice.

"Be someone with experience willing to be flexible, work different shifts," she said.

Yurasits, who feels his age works against him, says a company willing to go out on a limb is his perfect pre-holiday gift.

"I'm looking for someone who will give a chance to someone with a background and is dedicated," he said.

The Kelly Staffing job fair at the Days Inn lasts until Thursday. The Lehigh Valley Mall's fair ends at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
