Lehigh Valley native among those killed in Florida school shooting

A Lehigh Valley native is among those killed during a school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Athletic Director Chris Hixon had ties to Easton and went to high school in the Poconos.

Chris Hixon's high school classmates say he was a great guy who will be missed.

"It brings tears to my eyes," said Pleasant Valley graduate Tina Gould.

Hixon graduated in 1986.

"It's just horrible to think that this has touched so close to home for many that graduated with him," said Gould.

Hixon's classmates describe him as a friendly guy who excelled in everything he did, from scholastics to sports to just being a friend.

"When I came to Pleasant Valley I was still trying to find where I belong and he was one of the people who took me under his wing and really directed me and help me find my path," said Pleasant Valley graduate Rocco Seiler.

Seiler is now the principal of Pleasant Valley Middle School, but back in the day he was close to Hixon.

He says he kept in touch with Hixon as they both went off to college and went on to get teaching jobs.

Hixon was also a Navy reservist, serving in Iraq in 2007.

Seiler says Hixon was all heart, all the time.

"He would do anything for anybody and I'm so proud of what he has accomplished throughout his life he accomplished a lot," he said.

Easton Mayor Sal Panto expressed his deep sadness Thursday, saying Hixon's family members were active in Easton's Southside neighborhood.

There is a GoFundMe account to help all 17 victims of the school shooting.

Hixon's high school friends say they are thinking about planning a local memorial or fundraiser for his family.
