Lehigh Valley Zoo donates over $11,000 to giraffe conservation

NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - The Lehigh Valley Zoo donated over $11,000 to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation in an effort to support wild animal conservation around the world.

According to a news release from the zoo, it was able to make the donation because of the community's support for its giraffe, Murphy, and because of giraffe feeding ticket sales.

Over 17,000 people experienced the Masai Giraffe feeding deck in the first three months of operation, and the total proceeds from June ticket sales, as well as 10 percent from July and August, comprised the funds for the donation.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo says it will continue to donate 10 percent of the feeding ticket sales to giraffe conservation efforts. The foundation which the zoo donated to monitors and tracks giraffes in the wild, campaigns globally to raise awareness about the giraffe's endangered status, and educates local government and citizens on ways to protect a giraffe's environment.

“Please thank everyone for their dedication and hard work to save giraffes in Africa. This donation will make a difference," said Thomas Leiden, president of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation USA.

As a thank you to the community, the zoo is giving away free 2016 giraffe conservation pins to the first 700 guests Oct. 7 and Oct. 8.

“Our strategic plan is to safeguard wild animals in our care alongside supporting efforts to sustain endangered animals in the wild,” said Lehigh Valley Zoo President, Melissa Borland.  “We celebrate that Lehigh Valley Zoo guests enable us to contribute to the critical work of saving wild giraffes.”
