Letter carrier honored for alerting residents to gas leak

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A letter carrier in Allentown helped prevent a possible tragedy by using her nose.

Cynthia Rodriguez was honored by the United States Postal Service on Wednesday for her role in discovering a gas leak.

Rodriguez said she was on her route in February when she smelled gas outside a home on Chapel Avenue. She then knocked on the door and alerted the homeowners of the smell.

It turns out there was a gas leak underground in the front yard. The homeowners called UGI and got the leak fixed. They said they can't thank Rodriguez enough.

Rodriguez said she's glad everyone is OK. She's worked for the postal service in Allentown since 2007.
