Liberty High School students dismissed following lock down

School was locked down after report of possible gunmen; nothing suspicious found

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Liberty High School students were finally dismissed around 4:15 p.m. after the school was locked down for most of Wednesday afternoon following a report of three gunmen entering the school, which officials now believe was a hoax.

Bethlehem Area School District Superintendent Joseph Roy said the incident began around 1 p.m. in response to a 911 call.

Students were locked in at the school, located at 1115 Linden St. in Bethlehem, while police searched the building.

Police went from classroom to classroom and nothing suspicious was found, according to police. No guns or gunmen were found, and no injuries have been reported, according to police.

The lock down and police investigation were in response to a 911 call that three gunmen entered the school building, according to a police source.

Police said the 911 call came in at 12:40 p.m. from a prepaid Tracfone, which is not traceable.

The 911 caller said, "There was an individual inside the school and he was possibly armed with a gun, and the possibility was that he was going to start shooting."

School officials are now saying it appears the 911 call was a hoax.

While the lock down was in effect, Roy told 69 News that everyone was secure and safe in classrooms.

When the lock down went into effect, around 1 p.m., all entrances were blocked and people trying to enter the building were turned away.

Another eyewitness told 69 News that she saw officers with guns drawn as she drove by the school.

All Liberty High after school athletic events (home and away) were cancelled for Wednesday.

The school will be open on a regular schedule Thursday.
