Local developer challeneges new Allentown hockey arena construction

Lawsuit says city didn't follow zoning rules

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Demolition is already under way in downtown Allentown to make room for the new hockey arena, but a local developer is going to court to stop it from happening.

Abe Atiyeh has filed a lawsuit claiming the city planning commission didn't follow zoning rules in approving the project.

Atiyeh says the city started work one week before the plan was even approved.

"All I want the city to do is abide by the zoning laws, the planning laws, just like I would have to do if I was building this project," said Atiyeh.

City officials say they cannot comment on the suit because they haven't been served with the papers yet.

Atiyeh was unsuccessful in his own attempts to build a hockey arena several years ago.
