Lower Saucon moves forward with plans for playground

LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. - A park in Northampton County will soon sport a new playground.

The Lower Saucon Township Council approved plans Wednesday night for a new playground in the amount of $53,413.63.

The playground will include a swing set and slides as well as a canopy.

Materials and installation will be provided through National Joint Powers Alliance. Township Director of Finance Cathy Gorman said township solicitor B. Lincoln Treadwell recommended using National Joint Powers Alliance as its price includes labor.

"They do labor and prevailing wage," Gorman said.

Councilwoman Priscilla deLeon offered her full support.

"I think we should definitely follow the solicitor's advice," deLeon said.

Gorman said funds for the playground will be provided by way of a Northampton County open space grant in the amount of $92,000 the township received a few years ago.

Once the project is fully complete, the township will submit a reimbursement form for the costs of the project, Gorman said.

Gorman added the township hopes to install the playground this year. A pavilion will be installed as well.

"This [playground] is part of an overall plan to develop Polk Valley Park," she said. "The tot lot is the recent phase to be approved."

The park is located at 2068 Polk Valley Road.

Also during the meeting, David Willard recommended council retain a junior council member from one of the local high schools by September.

"We should make sure it's circulated to government teachers," council Vice President Tom Maxfield said of the request for the junior council member.

Willard also reminded council members to share with the audience any figures council discusses during a meeting.

"We kind of have to train ourselves," he said. "We have access to all this but the audience doesn't."
