RANCHO SANTE FE, Ca. - Police say a man who brutally beat his father to death in California has ties to the Lehigh Valley.

Leighton Dorey IV attended school in the Lehigh Valley and his mother, Carol Dorey, sells high-end real estate in the Lehigh Valley and Bucks County.

San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood described the killing of Leighton Dorey III as “a brutal and savage attack."

Dorey is accused of killing his father last month at his estate in Rancho Santa Fe.

In several newspaper reports, Greenwood says Dorey's father was strangled during a beating so ferocious that his spine was fractured in three places, his skull was cracked, his ribs on both sides were broken, and his face was cut in multiple spots.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department said his body was discovered when his wife returned from errands.

The woman called police and Dorey took off in a Jeep and was captured the next day in Riverside County.

Greenwood said Dorey IV had been at odds with his family for years.

Dorey’s Facebook page says he belongs to the Saucon Valley Class of '96 group.

One person on the page said, "I'm shocked and saddened to hear this."

KGTV is reporting the district attorney also filed a special circumstance charge of torture against Dorey because of the viciousness of the attack and that could lead to a death penalty trial.

The judge set no bail and his preliminary hearing is in October.
