Man allegedly caught using hallway as a bathroom

Police arrested him with a '40' of Steel Reserve

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A 64-year-old man is facing disorderly conduct charges after allegedly using an apartment building hallway as an impromptu bathroom.

Allentown police were dispatched to an apartment building in the 100 block of North Eighth Street shortly before 12:30 a.m. Friday to investigate a report of a man urinating and defecating in the foyer, according to court records. A witness, who reported hearing someone in the hallway coughing, told police there had been problems with similar incidents recently.

The witness allegedly spotted a man, later identified as Fernando A. Meireles, leaning over and defecating in the hallway, according to records. The witness startled Meireles, who pulled up his pants and stumbled out of the building with a 40-ounce bottle of Steel Reserve malt liquor in hand heading west on Chestnut Street.

Armed with a description, police found Meireles in the 800 block of Turner Street, carrying a bottle of Steel Reserve. Authorities said he was highly intoxicated, slurring his speech and smelling of feces.

Police charge Meireles, no confirmable address, with disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and public drunkenness. District Judge Michael Pochron arraigned Meireles Friday night, setting bail at $1,500.

He failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 16.
