Man allegedly ditches hidden gun after tip to police

Caller was worried he'd shoot someone

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A Lehigh County man is facing assault and weapons charges after a witness called police, worried that he was going to shoot another man with the gun she believed he had tucked away in his pants.

Bethlehem police charged Anthony J. Grajales, of Benner Avenue in Fountain Hill, with aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license and harassment, following his arrest Monday afternoon on the city’s south side. District Judge Antonia Grifo arraigned the 22-year-old later that night, setting bail at $35,000.

Police were initially dispatched to the Dunkin Donuts at 213 W. Fourth St. shortly after 3 p.m. to investigate a domestic disturbance. When police arrived, officers spoke with a 21-year-old woman, who said she confronted Grajales about the fact he was carrying a concealed firearm.

She said she was concerned he’d use it to shoot someone, reporting that Grajales had motioned toward his waistband while yelling at a man down the block that he was “going to catch some,” according to court records.

She told police that he allegedly twice hid behind a dumpster in an alley to adjust something in his waistband and believed he was carrying a silver handgun with a brown handle. When she confronted Grajales about it, he allegedly pushed her and spit on her.

A Lehigh University police officer spotted Grajales running behind a home in the 300 block of Packer Avenue. Officers followed his footsteps in the snow and allegedly found a Chipotle bag with a .22 caliber Iver Johnson Super Shot handgun inside.

Once he was in custody, Grajales allegedly spit in the arresting officer’s face.

After failing to post bail, Grajales was sent to Northampton County Prison to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Dec. 21.
