Man allegedly rings in the new year by headbutting cop

Police were preventing a fight

EASTON, Pa. - An Easton’s man 2018 got off to a rough start when he allegedly headbutted the police officer trying to prevent a fight.

Authorities charged Edwin Colon, of Williams Street, with aggravated assault and related offenses following his arrest early New Year’s morning in the first block of Lehn’s Court. District Judge Jacqueline Taschner arraigned the 43-year-old later that morning, setting bail at $20,000 with a 10 percent cash option if approved by Northampton County pre-trial services.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, an Easton police office on routine patrol was alerted to a drunken group of men causing a ruckus in the first block of Lehn’s Court. When the officer arrived, Colon and another man were squaring off and threatening to fight, according to court records.

Apparently displeased that the police prevented the fight, Colon allegedly picked a new fight, shoving the officer in the chest and threatening to fight him, according to records.

As the officer grabbed Colon’s left hand and directed him to give him the other hand, Colon allegedly began shoving the officer and pulling his arms away. Police said he ignored orders to stop resisting and kept pulling away until officers took him to the ground and handcuffed him.

As police tried to put Colon in the back of a squad car, he allegedly headbutted an officer in the face and began threatening another officer, saying, “I will find you and (expletive) you up. I will kill you,” according to records.

Police charged Colon with a felony count of aggravated assault, misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and resisting arrest and a summary count of disorderly conduct. After failing to post bail, Colon was sent to Northampton County Prison to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 15.
