Congregation urged to pray for those who committed crime

Man causes damage to Bethlehem church

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Jordan Allen Chavez, 20, of Bethlehem, was arrested Tuesday for causing several thousand dollars worth of damage to Wesley United Methodist Church at 2540 Center St. in the city.

Police report money was taken from the church offices. A church spokesman said only some loose change was taken, but the offering money remained secure in a safe.

The spokesman said some damage also was done in the offices, but added repairs were being made.

The church's Facebook page offered this advice to its congregation: "Please pray for our church and the people who committed the crime."

Chavez was charged with institutional vandalism and is in Lehigh County Prison on $8,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. August 19 before Magisterial District Judge David Howells in Allentown.
