PALMER TWP., Pa. - One man was taken into custody after police activity and road closures for several hours in Palmer Township Friday night.
Residents in the area of Van Buren and Corriere roads were restricted from accessing their homes as police dealt with reports of shots fired in a cornfield nearby.
According to Chief Larry Palmer with Palmer Police, one man was in custody and a gun has been recovered, though they are unsure if the gun was ever fired.
Crews crawled the cornfield in search of any shell casings.
Palmer says that early Friday evening, police responded to a call of shots fired and soon made contact with the suspect; they maintained this contact all night.
It was through this contact that police learned that the suspect was threatening suicide over some kind of domestic situation.
Palmer says police formed a human shield around the suspect, so neighbors were never in any real danger.
Police have identified the man as 51-year-old Clifford Easterday of Palmer Township.
He was taken to a psychiatric facility for a mental evaluation, the results of which will help police determine if charges will be filed.
The Glenmoor and Highlands at Glenmoor subdivisions on either side of Correire Road as well as a large section of Van Buren Road were blocked off by police throughout this ordeal.
