New Mack Anthem truck spurs order growth for Volvo

L. MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - Volvo Group is an international business behemoth, but it was their Lehigh Valley-based Mack Truck subsidiary that was the product star of their 2017 third quarter report, which was released Friday.

The introduction of the new, long haul Mack Anthem truck was characterized as “the completion of an historic upgrade of our North American truck lineup” by Volvo Group President and CEO Martin Lundstet. In addition to the Mack Anthem, the company also launched an upgrade in its vocational and regional haul segments.

“These product launches mark the biggest upgrade of our North American truck range in 20 years,” Lundstet said.

“Looking ahead to the next couple of quarters, we will be working hard to secure the introduction and the ramp-up of the new truck portfolio in North America as well as working together with our suppliers to reduce inefficiencies due to supply constraints for our truck production,” he said.

The positive reception of the Mack Anthem truck sparked an increase in Mack deliveries in the third quarter of 2017 to 5,100 units, an increase of 1,137 from the third quarter 2016. But Mack market share declined slightly from third quarter 2016 to 7.7 percent from 7.8 percent, mostly due to delivery problems.

Orders for Mack trucks in third quarter of 2017 totaled 6763, an increase of 73 percent from 3,903 in the third quarter of 2016. For the first nine months of 2017, orders were up 53 percent from 11,588 in 2016 to 17,752 in 2017. The order increase was attributed primarily to continued higher activity within the construction segment and freight markets.

Deliveries increased 29 percent from 3,963 in the third quarter to 5,100 in third quarter 2017, but declined slightly from 14,727 to 14,532 for the first three quarters of 2017, primarily due to difficulties securing parts to meet exploding demand.

With the help of Mack Trucks’ performance, net sales for the Volvo Group increased 12 percent in third quarter 2017 over third quarter 2016. Adjusted operating margin in third quarter 2017 reached 9.1 percent compared to 7 percent in third quarter 2016.

Mack Trucks is one of North America’s largest manufacturers of heavy duty Class 8 trucks, engines and transmissions. Founded in 1900, Mack Trucks are sold and serviced in more than 45 countries worldwide.

Mack is part of the Volvo Group, which is headquartered in Goteborg, Sweden, and manufacturers trucks, buses, construction equipment and marine and industrial engines.
