New service takes seniors for a ride

ITN Lehigh Valley is a brand new transportation service that provides rides for residents over the age of 60 to anywhere in the Allentown, Bethlehem or Easton area.

"We're reliable, we're affordable, we're available 24 hours a day 7 days a week," explained Executive Director Lois Favier.

The non-profit started its engine about three weeks ago, and it's the only ITN affiliate in the state.

Barbara Rowley still drives, but she's already used the service twice.

"It was very pleasant to be met at the bus terminal by a driver who then picked me up and brought me back home," she shared.

There are no destination restrictions, and the service is also available for folks over 18 who are visually impaired.

"I'm getting older, and I realize as people age vision changes for the worse a little bit, driving at night becomes less comfortable," Rowley said.

Memberships start at just $60 a year, and customers keep money in an account to pay for the rides. A pick-up fee and a mileage fee are charged for each time the service is used. No tips will be accepted.

"All of our rides are provided in private automobiles by volunteer and paid drivers who are trained and vetted before they're driving," added Favier.

Officials say the service offers a dignified way for seniors to transition from driving to not driving. Sometimes older adults stay behind the wheel longer then they should.

"It really keeps seniors active, involved and engaged and independent," Favier said.
