New York man charged in deadly 2016 crash on Route 222

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - The truck driver accused of causing a chain reaction crash in Upper Macungie Township in December 2016 is now facing charges, the Lehigh County district attorney announced Friday.

Gary Pellegrino, 67, is charged with vehicular homicide and aggravated assault by motor vehicle in the crash that killed an 81-year-old woman.

Pellegrino, of White Plains, New York, was driving a tractor-trailer on Route 222 near Krocks Road on December 5, 2016.

Police said he failed to stop at the intersection, causing a chain reaction crash involving five other vehicles that were stopped at a red light.

Fay Parry, who was 81 at the time, died at the scene.

Several others were taken to the hospital with injuries.

The district attorney said Pellegrino was grossly negligent and reckless, causing the crash.

He's charged with felony counts of vehicular homicide and aggravated assault by motor vehicle, as well as one count of involuntary manslaughter, seven counts of reckless endangerment and one count each of reckless driving, careless driving, following too closely and failing to drive at a safe speed.
