SLATINGTON, Pa. - While the island of Dominica is trying to recover from the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Maria, a nonprofit in Slatington is doing what it can to help.

Dorene Shannon is the president of Through These Hands. The group collects medical supplies and gets them to developing countries for hospitals and clinics.

"We have walkers, we have wheelchairs, hospital beds mattresses, potty chairs, shower chairs," Shannon said.

More than a dozen hospitals donated the supplies.

Shannon is working with Dr. Dale Dangleben, who wants to establish clinics Dominica.

"Groups like through these hands are miracle workers for third world countries. Dorene and her team are angels," he said.

Dangleben is the trauma medical director for Geisinger Holy Spirit. He's from Dominica and still has family on the island.

"Once the hurricane went through and there was no communication that was the toughest time not to hear from family members. I still have not heard from my dad. I heard second hand that he is okay," Dangleben said.

He plans on going back to Dominica with a group from New York.

"Nurses and doctors who are going back.  The plan is to get on the ground and actually have mobile clinics where we can help the people not just the wounded but also the people with chronic problems the diabetics, the asthmatics and the people with high blood pressure," he said.

Volunteers plan on leaving this weekend and staying for about a week.
