Northampton County district attorney considers run for Congress

More competition looms in the already highly competitive Congressional race to replace the retiring Charlie Dent.

Ever since Dent announced this month that he would not seek re-election in 2018, several candidates from both parties have thrown their hats into the ring.

Now a powerhouse Lehigh Valley Democrat says he's considering joining the race.

In a post on social media Saturday, longtime Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said he's looking into a possible run for the 15th Congressional District.

If Morganelli enters the race, he would join a crowded field that already includes Pa. Reps. Justin Simmons and Ryan Mackenzie on the Republican side, and former Lehigh County Commissioner Bill Leiner and Allentown Pastor Greg Edwards on the Democratic side.

Local democratic leaders said Morganelli would make a formidable opponent.

"He has certainly built up a strong reputation as DA in Northampton County. And people know him on both sides of the aisle," said Matt Munsey, chair of the Northampton County Democratic Committee.

Morganelli said he will talk more with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee next week and will make a definitive decision on whether he will run.
