Northampton County investigating thefts at human services building

EASTON, Pa. - Northampton County's sheriff's department is investigating a series of petty thefts at the county's human services building in Bethlehem Township, according to county Controller Steve Barron, who brought that information to county council Thursday evening.

"I'm just giving you the information," Barron told council. "I'm still asking questions."

Council members had questions of their own, as the thefts -- which involved small amounts of money and various personal items -- apparently happened in April, but were not reported to council until Thursday.

According to acting Sheriff Chris Ziegler, the thefts were reported in April after the building opened. When word spread, more people came forward.

He said he plans to turn over any findings to the district attorney's office, which would then prosecute a theft case.

Councilman Ken Kraft wanted to know what security cameras had turned up. So far, not much, Ziegler said.

"You could flood the building with cameras and still miss something," he said.

Councilman Lamont McClure said he hoped the investigation would continue, but noted that the thefts apparently stopped after the county's cleaning company fired a few employees.

"I don't think Sherlock Holmes needs to be called in," McClure said.
