Northampton County man killed in I-80 crash

William J. Boettinger of Danielsville died in five-vehicle accident

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A 60-year-old Northampton County man was killed Monday afternoon on Interstate 80 in Columbia County.

The accident forced the closure of westbound I-80 for more than eight hours, between exits 241 and 236, reported state police at Bloomsburg.

The crash occurred at 1:11 p.m. Monday at I-80's mile marker 235.6 in Scott Township.

William J. Boettinger of Danielsville, who was driving a Freightliner truck in the right hand lane of westbound I-80, failed to stop when he approached a backlog of traffic caused by construction, according to state police.

They reported Boettinger caused a five-vehicle accident on the highway.

His truck first ran into the rear of a Kenworth truck driven by Michael P. Catchings of Crystal Springs, Miss., then continued rolling along the right berm of the road, striking another Freightliner in the rear.

That rig overturned onto its right side. But its driver, William C. Wright of Downington, was not injured, reported police.

After being struck by Bettinger's truck, Catchings' rig went into the left travel lane.

It hit the passenger's side of a GMC Terrain driven by Brittany A. Driscoll of Pittston, then the rear of a Toyota Camry driven by Platini E. Michel of Philadelphia.

Police said Driscoll was taken to Geisinger Hospital in Danville with moderate injuries and Michel was taken with minor injuries. Joshua A. Gibson of Philadelphia, a passenger in Michel's car, was not injured.

Catchings, who was driving the Kenworth truck, also received minor injuries and was transported to Geisinger.

An autopsy on Boettinger was completed Tuesday in Lehigh Valley Hospital in Lehigh County.

Cause of death was multiple blunt trauma, according to the Columbia County Coroner's office, which ruled the manner of death was accidental.
