Northampton County mother addresses bullying after daughter's suicide

PLAINFIELD TWP., Pa. - A Northampton County mother is pushing for change after she says her child was bullied to death.

After her teenage daughter's suicide, Robin Zotynia says more has to be done about bullying.

Her 14-year-old daughter, Courtney, was in eighth grade at Wind Gap Middle School. Robin said Courtney killed herself in February after years of relentless bullying.

"Her suicide note said, 'I'll never be good enough,' and that is exactly how they wanted her to feel and they succeeded in making her feel that way," said Robin.

Courtney's room is filled with pictures and memories her family and friends now cherish.

"She was one of the best people out there," said her friend Amanda Katchmaric.

Robin said Courtney was bullied for years at school and online.

As a result, she said her daughter struggled with several issues until it became too much.

"The night she took her own life, she had posted, 'Does anyone want to hang out?' She got no responses, took it off and within an hour she was gone," said Robin.

She said Courtney shot herself in her bedroom.

Robin is now pushing for more to be done at the school and state level.

She plans to speak at Tuesday's Pen Argyl Area School Board meeting.

She said, "I believe their policies aren't effective, the ones that are in place, so I'd like to see them changed and I would like to see some stronger repercussions for these children who are doing this to other people."

A family friend also started a petition on regarding state law.

"We lost the fight with our daughter and we just don't want to see any other parents have to go through this," said Robin.

Courtney's older sister, Jessica Schmidt said, "It's hard, it's not the same, every room is a memory, everything we do is a memory with Courtney."

Calls to the school district superintendent were not returned Tuesday.
