Northampton DA to hold news conference on fatal police shooting

EASTON, Pa. - Prosecutors in Northampton County are ready to talk about a recent police-involved shooting.

The DA had been critical of the way the investigation was being handled.

A news conference is set for Thursday afternoon, when a decision on the future of the probe is expected.

47-year-old Anthony Ardo was shot and killed on May 20. Police say he was suicidal and kept walking towards them with with a firework mortar around his neck.

Several agencies responded to the 1300 block of Good Road in Lower Mount Bethel township on May 20.

Initial reports were for a suicidal man..

Police arrived and Ardo, was not at the home. Police say the situation escalated from there..

"The subject advised his family member that is police were called, he would blow himself up with and incendiary device," said Pennsylvania State Police Captain Richard D'ambrosio with Troop M.

Troopers say Ardo ignored their commands to get out of a car and get on the ground. Ardo attempted to light the fuse near troopers, then troopers shot him.

State police said they would conduct the investigation on their own to see if deadly force was justified, but Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli felt that an outside agency should be doing the investigation.

"I don't think I can just sand by and just accept what the agency is giving me, what they found, when it's their own guys. I think I need to have some scrutiny of what they did, what they didn't do," said Morganelli.

Morganelli did have his office conduct an investigation.
