NEWARK, N.J. - A Lehigh Valley man was arrested for having a loaded handgun in his carry-on luggage at Newark Liberty International Airport Saturday.

Officials say Transportation Security Administration officers detected a 9mm handgun inside the Northampton man's bag while it was passing through a checkpoint X-ray machine.

The gun was loaded with 19 hollow-point bullets, including one in the chamber.

TSA officers contacted Port Authority police and the man was arrested on state weapons charges.

Officials said he was ticketed to fly to Havana, Cuba.

The TSA did not release the man's name and has not provided details of the incidents.

69 News reached out to the TSA and other authorities  for more information about the incident and the man's identity, but so far they have provided no further details.

The TSA issued a reminder that travelers who bring firearms to checkpoints are subject to criminal charges and civil penalties up to $12,000.
