Officials on alert after recent violence near Musikfest

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The city of Bethlehem is beefing up its security, in light of two shooting incidents near Musikfest grounds this week.

Bethlehem Mayor Bob Donchez met with Police Chief Mark DiLuzio Tuesday to evaluate security throughout the city.

"Recent incidents that have occurred in the downtown will not go unanswered. Bethlehem is a very safe City and under my watch it will remain that way!" Donchez said in a press release Tuesday.

Police said two men were injured after a shooting near Garrison and Masslich Streets on Tuesday night.

On Friday night, shots were fired near Raspberry and Main Streets.

No one was hurt in that shooting.

No arrests have been made in either case, and police are still investigating.

Local officials said the incidents are not a reflection of the city, or the festival.

"I don't think there is a link between Musikfest and the shootings. It's unfortunate it's happening at this time when we have lots of visitors," said Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli.

"Bethlehem is a great city. Musikfest is a safe event and we welcome people to come out," said Councilman Bryan Callahan.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morgenlli encourages people to stay alert, but not stay away.

"Go to Musikfest. I'm going to Musikfest. My family is going to Musikfest. I'm not going to be walking around scared," Morganelli said.
