Organizers don't want a "record-breaking" auction in this case

NAZARETH, Pa. - Nazareth Attorney Gregory Reed has been collecting old records longer than he's been practicing law.

"I actually started collecting May 31, 1958 -- 59 years today!" Reed tells us.

That's the day the gears began turning.

"And it just became…an addiction…is that the word?" he laughs.

Over the years, his collection grew...and grew...and grew.

Why does he love them so much?

"The sound...I mean, having a certain number is not important to me," he tells us.

(For the record, he has about 5,000) but they aren't the vinyl records we know. Some of his are made of slate.

The original records were wax cylinders that are etched, and slid onto machines with names like “Victor” and “Edison.”

Edison’s favorite invention, Mr. Reed says, wasn't the light bulb -- it was his phonograph.

But for the man who likes old things, after all this time, and all these records, ("we don't live forever," Reed reminds us) the tables have turned.

Now, the next step in this passion is parting.

"I would hope that these records would be preserved, and people would enjoy them," he says.

Reed's keeping a few, about 300 he says, but the rest of his extensive, carefully crafted collection, is going up for auction this Saturday.

He says, surprisingly, parting isn't such sweet sorrow.

"We have to be realistic," Reed tells us, talking about downsizing to save his son trouble down the road.

And if you ask his wife, it seems it's the opposite of sorry.

"I think she's happy to see this auction take place," he says carefully.

That's a diplomatic, attorney answer if ever we heard one, we tell him.

"It's a safe one too!" he laughs.

And as both an attorney and a collector, you can put that on the record.

The auction will take place Saturday, June 3, at 141 S. Broad Street, Nazareth, PA 18064.
