Owner of Tex's Smokin' Barb-B-Q still hoping to reopen food stand

Tex Wells shut down his food stand amid zoning controversy

NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Tex Wells says don't count him out just yet.

Wells abruptly shut down his Tex's Smokin' Barb-B-Q food stand late last month while in the middle of a zoning dispute involving North Whitehall Township.

But, on Wednesday, Wells said the "jury is still out" on whether he will eventually reopen.

Wells said the township zoning board, on June 12, will consider a special exception he applied for to continue operating his food stand.

The North Whitehall Zoning Hearing Board just recently held a hearing on the issue. It said it has received complaints about the smoke coming from the stand, which is set up on Route 309 and Shankweiler Road.

Wells said the drama of the hearings came to be too trying and he cited comments made by an opponent last Thursday night's meeting.

Wells interpreted those comments as mocking his struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Wells said he's "humbled" and "overwhelmed by the community support" he's received since abruptly closing his operation in late May.
