Palmer promotes sergeant:

Township okays upgrades to fire department equipment

PALMER TWP., Pa. - After two decades on patrol, a township police officer in Northampton County is moving up in the ranks.

Tim Smith, who joined the Palmer police force in 1994, was promoted to sergeant during Monday night's board of supervisors' meeting.

"Good...awesome," Smith said following the meeting, describing how he felt.

His was the second promotion within the department in the last three weeks, Supervisors Chairman Dave Colver said.

At its last meeting, the board approved the promotion of Sgt. Wayne Smith.

Also Monday, the board approved a request from the township fire department to update some of its equipment.

The department wants to purchase two new SUVs that will function as mobile command centers, as well as a pair of Gator all-terrain vehicles.

"They can get into tighter spaces," Fire Commissioner Steve Gallagher told the board.

For example, rescuers could get to someone on the township's bike trail on a Gator a lot faster than with a traditional rescue vehicle.

The ATVs would also be useful when fighting brush fires.

Gallagher said the purchases would cost roughly $95,000, but would be covered by fire relief funds.

Gallagher also told the board the fire department is looking at working with the Pennsylvania Fire Recovering Billing Service, which works with insurance companies to reimburse fire companies for their use of equipment or utilities.
