Park may go to the dogs rather than the geese

Emmaus considering using dogs to drive geese away from Furnace Dam

Emmaus to bring in the dogs to fight geese?

EMMAUS, Pa. - Furnace Dam Park in Emmaus may have to go to the dogs to get rid of the geese.

Borough officials are considering hiring a business called Geese Police, which uses trained border collies to force geese to move out of an area without harming them

The small park along South 10th Street in the borough is literally covered in geese droppings.

Lenny Torro of Geese Police has been in talks with Emmaus officials. He is waiting to learn if borough council approves his company coming in to police the geese.

Borough council's general administration committee will discuss the Geese Police proposal when it meets in Emmaus Town Hall at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Torro said he can start immediately.

He said it takes from a couple of weeks to a few months for the dogs to persuadeĀ  geese to leave.

His company's motto is "get the flock out!"

Torro has been a Geese Police franchise owner for about five years. The company has been in operation for 25 years.

Earlier this summer Emmaus put a pair of flashing buoys in the Furnace Dam pond to persuade the geese to leave but that did not solve the problem.

Fortunately for the borough, the flashing lights came with a money-back guarantee.
