Payless may close more Lehigh Valley stores

WHITEHALL, Pa. - More workers at Payless Shoe stores in the Lehigh Valley may lose their jobs.

The retailer says it's potentially closing more stores across the country.

Back in April, Payless announced that it would close 400 stores when it filed for bankruptcy.

It now appears nearly 800 stores may be shutting down.

The Payless stores in our area that have been added to the list include ones at the Whitehall Mall location, the West Valley Marketplace in Allentown, Barn Plaza Shopping Center in Doylestown, and The Court of Upper Providence.

Payless had announced in April the Phillipsburg Mall store, the Wind Gap Plaza store , and the Montgomery Square Shopping Center store would close.

Payless released a statement Thursday that reads:

"As part of Payless' Chapter 11 restructuring, we are taking steps to further rationalize our store fleet in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. We do not anticipate store closures in other markets as a result of this action, including Latin America and Canada.

We are seeking U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval to close 112 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and we are also seeking the authority to close up to an additional 296 stores in those regions."
