Phantoms won't drop puck in Allentown as planned in 2013

Ice hockey team's debut in new arena delayed until 2014-2015 season

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Phantoms' hockey team plans to start the 2014 season in its new Allentown arena.

The team was originally scheduled to start the 2013-2014 season in Allentown, but lawsuits by neighboring municipalities delayed construction of the 8,500-seat arena.

"Although it may be possible for the arena to be completed sometime during the 2013 season, we felt it was in the best interest of our fans, our corporate partners, our team and the Flyers to start playing in our new home in Allentown at the start of the 2014 season," said Jim Brooks, co-owner of the team.

"We carefully studied all possible scenarios for a mid-season 2013 start, however, we are dedicated to our fans and they deserve to experience a full and natural opening that will provide the ultimate experience from pre-season to playoffs," Brooks added.

Team officials said reserved seats in the arena and all deposits will remain intact.

Fans who have purchased tickets are being contacted directly by the team. Additional seats remain on sale, and fans are encouraged to join the ticket waiting list at www.phantomsarena.com.

The Phantoms are the American Hockey League's top development team of the Philadelphia Flyers and are currently playing in Glens Falls, N.Y.

The team played its first 13 seasons at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

The Phantoms have made a 30-year commitment to play at Allentown's new arena, whose founding partners include Air Products, Lehigh Valley Health Network and Service Electric Cable TV and Communications.
