Planned Parenthood tweet sparks social media firestorm

The tweet came from Planned Parenthood's local branch in Lehigh County, but it has created backlash all over the nation.

The tweet only stayed up for a couple of hours and read:

“We need a Disney princess who's had an abortion, We need a Disney princess who's pro-choice. We need a Disney princess who's an undocumented immigrant. We need a Disney princess who's actually a union worker. We need a Disney princess who's trans.”

It was a message that sent the social media site into a frenzy.

"Initially it makes me very suspicious, again in this climate of sending out fake news,” said one person outside the Bethlehem library.

But it wasn't fake news and comments on Twitter called for the federal government to defund the organization.

Locally, some felt the same way.

"You don't have a princess or prince that is like this,” said Paul Schoch. “You're pushing the limits as far as being purely entertaining."

Others wish Planned Parenthood would have taken a different approach.

"I'm assuming they are trying to push things, open up a broader base of support and such, which is good. I'd rather have the conversation not done through a tweet," one woman said.

Planned Parenthood Keystone President and CEO Melissa Reed said in a statement:

“Planned Parenthood believes pop culture -- television shows, music, and movies -- has a critical role to play in educating the public and sparking meaningful conversations around sexual and reproductive health issues and policies. Upon reflection, we decided that the seriousness of the point we were trying to make was not appropriate for the subject matter of context and we removed the tweet.

Even though the tweet was removed, there are still plenty of people sharing the message on social media.

As one person wrote to Planned Parenthood Keystone, screenshots last forever.
